"author" isn’t a major. Writing and creative writing are. Or English literature.

You don’t need ANY college courses to become an author. Get a college degree in something useful as a back-up plan if you want, and write on the side. The best way to become a great writer is to read as much as possible. The best writers are first, and foremost, great readers! When you read thousands of books, you tend to pick up everything very intuitively. No English class can teach you as well as you can teach yourself by reading.
