The course should have some kind of policy that lets you claim everything and anything you write is all your own work, and if someone does pinch your idea before you publish (if you choose to), then later on in life you can go back to these records showing that it was your story first and SUE THEM. Muahahaha!! Just make sure that when handing in assignments, you have some sheet saying that it's your work, with the date and your signature on it.
